Perhaps the most stunning site possible for any architectural intervention. Situated on Ullswater in the Lake District National Park, the proposal is for a boathouse renovation alongside a new build cabin within the woodland. The brief was to provide day accommodation in the boathouse and overnight guest accommodation in the cabin, while making the most of the outdoor spaces.
One of the most refreshing brief requirements from the client was minimal disturbance to the existing woodland and protection of trees being paramount. With this in mind and the stringent planning requirements within the Lake District, careful consideration of existing tree root protection areas became a huge factor in delicately positioning the cabin on the hillside. The cabin itself cascades down the steep sloped hillside avoiding excavation of the landscape by following the natural curves of the site.
Capturing key views from the frameless glazed windows allows one to focus on the beauty of the surrounding landscape, allowing the atmosphere of the hillside to offer full impact. The cabin is clad in a locally sourced larch timber responding to its woodland setting.
